Courses
    and Qualifications

... how e-learning at Calvary University leads to the end result

The Credit Process

Calvary University follows the standard convention that learning is quantified by credits which are accumulated through completing courses which each denote a specific study subject. Several courses are grouped by design and choice into programmes which lead to qualifications (based on fixed rules).

  • Candidates who wish to apply go through an admission evaluation process.
  • Candidates may enrol for courses (part of a qualification) or for the whole programme (leading to a qualification).
  • After the successful completion of predetermined portions of courses (usually after assessment has taken place) credits are awarded.
  • Students are permitted to accumulate credits and to transfer them from one learning situation to another (institutions, programmes, courses, etc.).
  • After the successful completion of each course, credits are awarded and the student can exit or continue the planned programme.
  • After the successful completion of each programme credits are transcripted and the student can exit the programme with a qualification.

Programme

A programme is a designed series of subject courses which will lead to a qualification. Each course carries a certain predetermined credit weight. The student may choose a set programme or construct a programme using courses according to set rules. Usually this takes place within one faculty but the applicant may select courses from other faculties where these complement their choice of majors and minors in one discipline (faculty).

Each academic year is denoted by 120 credits. Since a notional credit indicates 10 hours of activity, 1200 hours leads to a qualification such as a certificate. Some qualifications have a different number of credits. See a list of credits where our course fees are quoted for the minimum credits of the main programmes. These fees must be adjusted pro-rata according to the real credits taken in a programme. We also provide a list for graduate and post-graduate fees.

Qualification and Endorsement

A Diploma consists of 240 credits. To obtain a Bachelor degree, another 150 credits must be completed to reach the 390 credit mark. The student selects such courses as will provide these credits. There are different ways of doing this depending on the desired qualification. These qualifications may be:

  • a range of qualifications: Certificate (120), Diploma (240), Bachelor (390), Honours (510), Masters (690) or Doctoral (840) of a Field (discipline or Faculty)
  • a 150-credit post-graduate Diploma in a Field, (following a Bachelor of 390 credits) to reach a total of 510 credits
  • an endorsement* (70 to 90 credits) in another field to an existing/current qualification

* A double endorsement can be attained by selecting 2 x 70 credits in two different fields to an existing or current Bachelor qualification of 390 credits of which one set of 70 credits lies above the Bachelor level of 390 credits.

Transcripts Describe Qualifications

On completion of a programme that leads to a qualification, CU will issue the signed and sealed certificate to the student in a manner and at an address indicated by the student. If a local Calvary Group/Learning Centre was involved, CU will request that such a group/centre will hand over the qualification at a formal graduation arranged by the local entity on behalf of CU.

If the student intends to continue studies at another institution of higher education, an official transcript of the attained qualification (or incomplete studies) may be required, indicating the subjects, an average mark and the detailed content and objectives of the programme.

The qualification transcript can be obtained (for registered students only) at a cost of $5 per copy. Requests must be channeled through the Calvary Group, Learning Centre or national contact. Alternatively, if there is no national representation, the student must indicate upon registration that credits should be posted to the database for qualification generation. CU will then act upon accumulated credit levels and issue qualification certificates at a rate of $5 per qualification (included in registration). An additional $5 postage and handling will be charged unless a Calvary Group (of 5 students or more) is situated at one postal/delivery address.

Disputes and Moderation Appeal

Tests, assignments and tasks are marked in differing ways by the different Faculties. Students have recourse to revision of marks through each local administration. The quality officer appointed to be the assessment moderator may be requested to review any specific assessment the student deems to be questionable. If no satisfaction is reached in this way, the appointed Learning Centre moderator or area mentor will make a final ruling.
