The Tuition Model

... of the Faculty for effective e-learning

Synopsis

The following is a synopsis of our tuition model:

  • It is based on the Objective Directed Learning principles
  • Programmes and courses are presented on a part time basis
  • In general CU follows the IT-based distance-learning method of tuition (also called open-learning, virtual-learning or e-learning)
  • Every learner is guided through the learning process by an appointed and registered Academic Tutor
  • The contact method of tuition can be considered if there is a need for it and if the situation is conducive to this method
  • Practical learning activities take place through face-to-face contact with the academic tutor and peers
  • A course professor is appointed for each course
  • CU manages all learning activities through geographically decentralised Learning Centres and study groups
  • Individual students are allocated to existing CU Learning Centres
  • Each student is assigned to a (personal) academic tutor
  • The tuition model is characterised by the following professional learning and support resources:
    • Course professor
    • Academic tutor
    • Course study guide
    • Course Website
    • Textbooks
    • Course CD
    • Comprehensive Academic Guide
    • Local support (peer) group
    • Learning management
    • Administrative staff
    • Continuous assessment process

  • Six successive programmes (from the Cert BA to the DBA) offer an ideal learning pathway in the field of Business Administration
  • The successful completion of a programme leads to a qualification
  • Approximately six courses (also called subjects) constitute a programme
  • Courses are characterised by the following activities:
    • Theoretical learning session activities. Prescribed theoretical learning sessions take place under the supervision of qualified academic tutors and are characterised by mastering specific learning material, attaining specific learning objectives and outcomes through self study
    • Practical learning sessions activities. Practical learning sessions are aimed at putting theory into practice. Prescribed practicals can include activities such as formal and informal group work, visits, practical work and involvement in business projects
    • Continuous assessment activities. Scheduled tests, written assignments, practical tasks and group work and keeping a workfile are based on the theoretical learning material of the learning sessions

  • A assessment software programme automatically marks the scheduled tests, assignments, tasks and group work
  • Candidates who wish to apply go through an admission evaluation process
  • Candidates may enrol for courses (part of a qualification) or for the whole programme (leading to a qualification)
  • After the successful completion of predetermined portions of courses (usually after assessment has taken place) credits are awarded
  • Students are permitted to accumulate credits and to transfer them from one learning situation to another (institutions, programmes, courses, etc)
  • After the successful completion of each course, credits are awarded and the student can exit the programme
  • After the successful completion of each programme credits are awarded and the student can exit the programme with a qualification
  • A student's knowledge, understanding, skills, experience, values and attitudes (applied competence) held as a result of formal training, work experience and/or life experience may be recognized under certain conditions - referred to as recognition for prior learning (RPL)
