Programme details for the Certificate in Business Administration

Courses Presented in This Programme

The BBA includes the following compulsory courses:

  • Management Accounting
  • Information Management
  • E-Commerce
  • Business Leadership

Duration of the Programme

This programme has a minimum learning duration of eight months before the qualification certificate can be issued. The maximum learning duration is normally two years.

Prerequisites

Completion of the Dip BA or having been granted the status of a Dip BA qualification through the process of Recognition of Prior Learning, as confirmed by the CU Senate.

Single courses may be enrolled for to complete other qualifications. In such cases the student must consider that the courses sequentially before each course were selected by CU to serve as foundational knowledge for the more advanced courses.

Management Accounting

Credits: 25

Synopsis. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to management accounting. It helps students better understand management accounting topics, research, and issues from the perspective of a business manager. It explains the fundamental principles clearly and concisely, whilst showing how accounting information can be used to make decisions in a real business context.

  • Management accounting: information that creates value
  • Cost management concepts and cost behaviour
  • Traditional cost management systems
  • Activity-based cost management systems
  • Management accounting information for activity and process decisions
  • Cost information for pricing and product planning
  • Management accounting and control systems: assessing performance over the value chain
  • Motivating behaviour in management accounting and control systems
  • The balanced scorecard
  • Using budgets to achieve organizational objectives
  • Capital budgeting
  • Financial control

Information Management

Credits: 20

Synopsis. Information systems knowledge is essential for creating competitive firms, managing global corporations, and providing useful products and services to customers. This course introduces management information systems that students will find vital to their professional success. It emphasises the digital integration of the firm through enterprise applications (management of the supply chain, customer relationships, enterprise systems, and knowledge).

  • Managing the digital firm
  • Information systems in the enterprise
  • Information systems, organisations, management, and strategy
  • The digital firm: electronic commerce and electronic business
  • Ethical and social issues in the digital firm

E-Commerce

Synopsis. This course provides an overview of the current and next generation of e-commerce. It emphasizes the three major driving forces behind e-commerce: technology change, business development, and social controversies. Each of these driving forces is represented in the course, and together they provide a coherent conceptual framework for understanding e-commerce. The result is a sophisticated complete treatment of a very diverse subject that is aimed specifically at students interested in business concepts, IS/IT developments, and computer science applications.

  • E-commerce business models and concepts
  • The internet and World Wide Web: e-commerce infrastructure
  • Building an e-commerce web site

Business Leadership

Synopsis. This course is for anyone wishing to develop his or her ability to manage and lead. It provides the most comprehensive survey of the major theories and research on leadership and managerial effectiveness in formal organizations with practical suggestions for improving leadership skills.
